The United States is experiencing its second peak in flu cases this season, with a 30% test positivity rate. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been at least 20 million cases and 11,000 deaths from flu so far this season. Hospitalizations are also rising, with an estimated 38,255 hospitalizations from flu last week.
However, new over-the-counter tests can help identify whether an illness is Covid-19 or influenza. These tests allow patients to learn what may be making them sick without needing a clinic visit or waiting in line. The tests use self-collected nasal swabs and provide results within 15 to 30 minutes.
The CDC estimates that people who test positive for Covid or flu should isolate themselves as much as possible to protect loved ones. Experts say isolation can help prevent the spread of illness and get patients treatment faster. Home tests may also motivate patients to contact their providers earlier, leading to more effective treatment.
However, adoption of these new tests is slow due to factors such as cost. The over-the-counter Covid-flu tests are not covered by insurance and price at around $30 per two-pack. Experts worry that people’s reluctance to pay for the tests may lead to lower usage rates.
