A new report from the CDC shows a significant decline in opioid overdose deaths in the US, with 80,000 Americans dying last year – a 27% decrease from the previous year. The shift is attributed to increased access to care and initiatives from federal, state, and local governments.
According to Rachel Krouse, Clinical Director of Coastal Horizons, education about treatment options and Narcan distribution has been crucial in reducing overdose deaths. Narcan, also known as Naloxone, is a single-use nasal spray that can rapidly reverse the effects of an overdose, now commonly found in schools, doctors’ offices, and with first responders.
Coastal Horizons has implemented peer programs, where individuals who have completed treatment encourage others to do the same. This approach has proven effective, allowing people with lower education levels to serve their communities and guide those through the recovery process.
Although overdose deaths are still higher than pre-pandemic levels, advocates emphasize that continued progress is necessary. With the CDC’s data showing a decline in opioid overdose deaths, it’s essential to maintain access to care and keep Narcan accessible to prevent further losses.
