President Donald Trump’s proposal to seize Iran’s strategic island of Kharg could lead to catastrophic consequences for the United States and its allies. While some Iran hawks have urged Trump to take control of the island, a closer examination reveals that such an operation would be a recipe for disaster.
Kharg Island is home to a critical oil terminal processing 90% of Iran’s exports, making it a vital prize in any war with Tehran. However, capturing the island without adequate planning and resources would lead to significant risks for US troops. The strategic location, comprising 20,000 Iranian civilians and Iranian military forces, makes any invasion operation inherently perilous.
The proposed seizure plan, which includes airborne or heliborne insertion options, has numerous weaknesses. Any US operation would require thousands of troops, far exceeding the MEU’s capabilities, and would inevitably lead to civilian casualties and potential hostage situations.
Moreover, Iran’s leaders prioritize their survival over protecting oil infrastructure, potentially leading them to abandon negotiations in favor of a more devastating response. The prospect of holding entire battalions as de facto hostages is also a possibility, further increasing the risks associated with any US operation on the island.
The White House should take notice that seizing Kharg Island would lead to mission creep, allowing for additional deployments to the Iranian mainland and escalating tensions even further. Lawmakers must carefully consider whether supporting this ill-defined goal of regime change through increased funding is worth the risk of catastrophic consequences in the region.
