US Shifts Stance on Russia-Ukraine War Amid Trump’s Criticism

Three years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Europe marked a grim anniversary as the US changed its stance under President Donald Trump. The shift has sparked concern across Europe and beyond, with Trump seeking to deflect blame from Russia for the war and criticize Ukrainians and European allies.

In Kyiv, more than a dozen Western leaders commemorated the third anniversary of the invasion, but a US representative was noticeably absent. This marked a dramatic shift in US policy since Trump took office again.

Trump has promised to end the war but largely left Ukraine out of negotiations. Last week, he called Ukraine’s president a dictator and questioned US funding for Kyiv. Today, he met with French President Emmanuel Macron and leaders of the world’s seven largest economies to discuss the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed directly to Trump, urging cooperation from America, Europe, and Ukraine in negotiations with Russia. Trump responded that the US can end the war within weeks, but did not confirm if concrete security guarantees were part of the deal.

Trump also said Russian President Vladimir Putin would accept European peacekeepers in Ukraine as part of a potential cease-fire. However, Putin denied discussing detailed resolution plans with Trump. The US voted against a UN resolution condemning Russian aggression in Ukraine, further widening the rift between the Trump administration and US allies.
