US Ski Resort Hit by Rare Labor Strike Over Low Wages

A rare labor strike at Park City Mountain Resort in Utah, the largest ski resort in the US, has left many runs closed and caused long lines for ski lifts. The strike, which began over the busy holidays and carried into the new year, is over wages that ski patrollers say are too low for high living costs in pricey mountain towns like Park City. The union, Park City Professional Ski Patrollers Association, seeks an increase from $21 to $27 per hour, citing a livable wage of $27 in the area. Vail Resorts, which owns the resort, is offering a 4% pay increase and $1,600 per year for equipment. Mediation between the two sides has been ongoing since March, with talks stalled before 200 patrollers went on strike on December 27.
