US Solar Energy Industry Threatened by ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’

A proposed bill has significant implications for the US solar energy industry, handing dominance to China. The “Big, Beautiful Bill” makes sweeping changes to clean energy programs, gutting incentives for domestic and utility-scale solar power.

The bill eliminates Clean Electricity Production Credits and axes the Domestic Content bonus that incentivized US-made gear. While some provisions were dropped during Senate proceedings, the remaining language poses a threat to the industry.

According to Rob Gardner, Vice President of Congressional and Regulatory Affairs for SEMA, maintaining production tax credits for clean energy component manufacturers is a positive aspect. However, creating uncertainty for long-term demand and allowing cheaper Chinese alternatives to flood the market is a major issue.

Industry leaders, including Abigail Ross Hopper of the Solar Energy Industries Association and Jason Grumet of the American Clean Power Association, criticize the bill as undermining America’s manufacturing comeback and stepping backward from energy policy. Environmental groups also condemn the bill, calling it a “dark day” in the fight against climate change.
