Four US soldiers who went missing after their vehicle was submerged in a bog in Lithuania have been identified, with the bodies of three recovered by the Army on Monday. The recovery of the soldier’s vehicle, an M88 Hercules, has also been confirmed.
The 3rd Infantry Division commander, Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie, expressed his condolences to the families of the missing soldiers, calling them “a part of our family.” He praised the search and recovery efforts led by Lithuania, US and partner military forces, which have been working around the clock since March 25.
Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nausėda also offered his condolences, saying that his country is mourning the loss of the soldiers. NATO officials pointed to the cooperation between allies as a prime example of their importance in times of crisis.
The search for the fourth missing soldier continues, with Lithuania providing extensive support, including helicopters, drones, and technical experts. The recovery effort has been widely praised for its international cooperation and commitment to helping one’s allies in need.
As one US Army official said, “For those that say our allies aren’t doing enough, those are people that didn’t see this.” The soldier who remains missing is believed to be part of the 1st Armored Brigade, which is based out of Fort Stewart, Georgia.
