Companies Impulse Space and Anduril will create space interceptors to destroy missiles from orbit as part of a $185 billion missile defense system. The Pentagon has selected the companies to develop technology that allows tracking and destroying missiles directly from space. Impulse Space, founded by former SpaceX engineer Tom Mueller, will work on prototypes with Anduril, which is a subcontractor for the project. This is the first stage of a large program, with smaller contracts awarded in November 2025 for prototype development. The goal is to develop a multi-layered missile defense system combining ground, air, and space components by 2028.
