US Space Force to Launch First Blue Ring Spacecraft Next Spring

The US Space Force is set to launch its first Blue Ring spacecraft next spring, with assistance from Scout Space’s Owl sensor technology. The mission aims to enhance space domain awareness (SDA) in the geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO) domain.

Blue Origin and Scout Space are integrating the Owl sensor onto the Blue Ring spacecraft to provide real-time tracking, characterization, and assessment of space objects. This advanced system features onboard artificial intelligence-driven processing and autonomous decision-making capabilities.

The launch will build on existing SDA systems in GEO, including National Reconnaissance Office satellites, Northrop Grumman-built NOC satellites, and Lockheed Martin’s Space Fence radar. The US Space Force is also fielding the Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability (DARC) radar in various locations.

Blue Ring will offer a range of capabilities, including payload deployment, satellite refueling, data relay, and orbit maneuvers. The first mission highlights the dynamic maneuverability of Blue Ring and the Owl sensor’s ability to detect satellites and debris at long distances.
