US Steel Groups Back Tariffs on Foreign Imports

Five major steel industry organizations have endorsed President Trump’s plan to restore tariffs on imported steel, citing a need for “a level playing field” for American producers and workers.

The groups, representing the American iron and steel sector, argue that comprehensive tariffs initially imposed in 2018 helped restart idled mills, rehire laid-off workers, and invest billions of dollars in new plants. However, exemptions granted to certain countries and products have weakened the measures, leading to increased imports and a threat to domestic producers’ viability.

The organizations welcome President Trump’s actions to restore the tariffs’ effectiveness and support a “level playing field” for American steelmakers and their employees. By doing so, they aim to protect national security and safeguard U.S. industry jobs.
