The US President Donald Trump ordered strikes on three key Iranian nuclear sites on Saturday night, targeting the Fordow facility, Natanz site, and Isfahan research complex. The airstrikes used powerful bunker-busting bombs weighing 30,000 pounds, which are believed to be capable of penetrating deep into underground targets.
Satellite imagery showed significant damage at the Fordow site, including six large craters, while the US also targeted Natanz with two bunker-busting bombs. At Isfahan, at least 18 structures were destroyed or partially damaged in satellite images, and tunnel entrances leading into the underground complex were observed to be damaged.
Iran’s foreign minister called the US actions a “very big red line,” but other Iranian officials downplayed the strikes’ impact. Analysts believe that the damage inflicted on Iran’s nuclear program could have long-term consequences for the country’s nuclear ambitions.
The use of powerful bunker-busting bombs suggests that the US was determined to cause significant damage, rather than just targeting surface infrastructure. The strikes also raise questions about the effectiveness of satellite-based monitoring in detecting and verifying military operations.
