The US Surgeon General has issued a new advisory warning of the link between alcohol consumption and an increased risk of multiple cancers, including throat, liver, esophageal, mouth, larynx, colon, and rectal cancers. Dr. Vivek Murthy released the guidance following research that has shown a significant correlation between alcohol intake and cancer.
Dr. Brett Osborn, a Florida neurosurgeon and longevity expert, applauded the advisory, stating that alcohol is a toxin that contributes to various health problems, including obesity, which is a “gateway disease” to multiple cancers and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.
Osborn warned that excessive drinking can cause oxidative damage, leading to cancer formation through the release of free radicals, which damage cells and tissues. He has seen firsthand the effects of alcohol on the brain in his patients with alcoholism.
The surgeon general advises reducing or eliminating alcohol from one’s diet to minimize cancer risk. Osborn recommends a gradual reduction in drinking, suggesting a 50% decrease within the next year, followed by another 50%, until the habit is completely eliminated.
