US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has released an advisory warning that parental burnout is a public health concern. The advisory highlights the overwhelming pace of modern life, which leaves parents feeling exhausted and stressed. Mothers and fathers now work longer hours than in 1985 but also spend more time on childcare, leaving little room for personal leisure or sleep.
The advisory notes that parents caring for aging parents or other loved ones are even more strained. A “culture of comparison” perpetuated online around milestones and achievements has contributed to this stress, making families feel like they’re always behind.
According to the American Psychological Association’s 2023 survey, 33% of parents reported high levels of stress in the past month, compared to 20% of other adults. The advisory emphasizes that it’s time for a culture shift, valuing and respecting time spent parenting as much as time spent working.
The advisory calls for tangible support for parents, including a national paid family and medical leave program, paid sick time, and bolstered support for child care financial assistance. Employers can also expand programs supporting parent well-being, such as paid leave and flexible work schedules.
Communities, schools, and healthcare workers can help by providing additional screening and support, especially for at-risk parents. The advisory recommends developing standardized measures of mental health and well-being specifically for parents.
