The United States has imposed tariffs of 39% on Swiss imports, putting 100,000 jobs in Switzerland at risk, mainly in the watchmaking, machinery, metals, and food industries, warns economiesuisse. The business umbrella organisation states that suppliers and service providers will also suffer indirectly from the consequences.
According to economiesuisse, nearly 20,000 jobs in the electronics sector, 14,200 in the food and tobacco sector, and 13,900 in pharmaceuticals are directly affected by the customs duties. Suppliers may have even more employees on average, making the actual number of people affected potentially higher.
The Swiss government has expressed its determination to continue dialogue with the US, while economiesuisse calls for political leaders to ease administrative burdens and offset the competitive disadvantage on the US market by improving Switzerland’s framework conditions.
