The United States’ semifinal win against Guatemala in the CONCACAF Gold Cup was marked by an unusual and energized crowd. Guatemalan fans easily outnumbered American fans at Energizer Park, with many wearing jerseys and flags to show their support for their national team.
“It’s been very different,” said U.S. captain Tim Ream, who had never seen a crowd like it in his hometown. “The guys were asking me what was going on, and I told them it’s just what you’re gonna get when playing Central American teams.”
Guatemalan fans descended upon the stadium from all over, creating an electric atmosphere that boosted their team’s morale. The U.S. players agreed that this experience would be beneficial in the upcoming final against Mexico.
“This environment can help those guys,” Ream said. “I think at the end of the day, when there’s qualifying again, that environment can be good for them.”
Coach Mauricio Pochettino praised the Guatemalan fans, saying it was like playing in their country. The energy from the crowd was palpable, and players were seen crying with joy.
The team’s emerging star Diego Luna scored two goals in the first 15 minutes to take control of the game, which they held onto until a late goal by Guatemala made for a tense final few minutes.
Luna’s performance was impressive, but he credited his coach, Pochettino, for giving him the opportunity to shine. “I’m happy I scored goals,” Luna said. “But it’s about helping the team win.”
The U.S. team will face Mexico in the Gold Cup final on Sunday, and Ream believes that their experience against Guatemala fans will help them prepare for the bigger crowd and greater pressure.
