US Teenagers Turn to Caffeine Pouches for Energy Boost, Experts Sound Alarm

Caffeine pouches have become increasingly popular among US teenagers, who use them to get an energy boost. The small, tea bag-like pouches are placed between the lips and gums, delivering caffeine directly into the bloodstream. Some social media influencers recommend these products to gym-goers for better performance and students for improved concentration during exams.

However, experts warn that this trend could reach the UK and lead to serious health issues. Dr Rob van Dam from George Washington University says that one pad of caffeine pouches contains as much caffeine as a cup of coffee, making it easy to take in too much caffeine. This can cause bad side effects, including rapid heart rate, irregular heartbeats, seizures, and even death.

Young people have a lower tolerance for caffeine, making them more susceptible to hospitalization if they consume too much. The effects of caffeine pouches are felt within minutes and can last for hours, which is particularly concerning given the speed at which young people absorb the stimulant.

The UK should be aware of the potential risks associated with caffeine pouches, particularly since many energy drinks already carry warnings about their suitability for certain groups, such as children and pregnant women. Experts also caution that using caffeine pouches can lead to an increased risk of switching to snuff or nicotine pouches.

While caffeine is a stimulant that can make exercise seem easier, it’s essential to monitor intake levels. The generally safe dose for healthy adults is 400 milligrams per day, equivalent to about four cups of instant coffee. Pregnant women and children should be cautious with caffeine-containing products.
