US President Donald Trump announced an agreement with China to keep TikTok operating in the United States under US control. The deal requires TikTok’s American assets to be transferred to US owners from China’s ByteDance, potentially resolving a saga that has lingered for nearly a year.
Under the terms of the agreement, ByteDance will retain its single largest ownership stake at 19.9%, while an 80% consortium including ByteDance’s shareholders and new investors such as Andreessen Horowitz will hold majority control.
The deal comes after months-long talks between the US and China to defuse a wide-ranging trade war that has unnerved global markets. The agreement is expected to close in 30-45 days, with the US entity having an American-dominated board and one member designated by the US government.
However, the details of the deal are subject to approval from the Republican-controlled Congress, which passed a law requiring TikTok’s divestiture due to fears that its US user data could be accessed by the Chinese government.
