US Travel Warning Sparks Decline in Foreign Arrivals

Foreign arrivals into major U.S. airports plummeted by over 20% compared to last year, according to customs data. The decline affects not only Canada but also other countries, signaling a significant drop in international tourism.

A recent uptick in foreign arrivals did follow, but the number remained down 18.4% as of March 28 compared to last year. In contrast, U.S. citizens returning home showed an increase of nearly 14% by late March.

Several factors may be contributing to this trend, including trade wars, economic uncertainty, and fears of detention or harassment. Some countries have issued new travel warnings advising their citizens against visiting the U.S.

Industry experts predict a modest drag on U.S. GDP due to the decline in foreign tourism, potentially totaling 0.1%. The impact of this decline is difficult to predict, but it could worsen if President Trump’s tariffs are implemented.

This trend may be linked to Canada’s growing sense of patriotism and disdain for American products, fueled by President Trump’s policies, including tariffs and his suggestion that Canada become the 51st U.S. state.
