US President Donald Trump has been pushing for a diplomatic solution to the three-year-old conflict between Ukraine and Russia. In a meeting with Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia, both sides discussed proposals to protect energy facilities and critical infrastructure.
Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov said the talks aimed to bring “just peace closer” and strengthen security. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed skepticism about Russia’s intentions, stating that Putin must order an end to strikes on Ukraine.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff downplayed concerns among European leaders that a potential peace deal could embolden Putin to invade other neighbours. “I just don’t see that he wants to take all of Europe,” Witkoff said.
Despite the skepticism, Trump remains optimistic about the chances for ending the war, citing Putin’s expressed desire for peace. The US hopes to reach a broad ceasefire within weeks, with a truce agreement by April 20.
A recent drone attack on Kyiv killed at least three people, including a child, and damaged high-rise apartment buildings. Russian authorities have reported destroying Ukrainian drones targeting southwestern regions, but the conflict continues.
The negotiations come as European countries increase their military support for Ukraine, with Britain and France leading efforts to boost security.
