Vice President-elect JD Vance stated in an interview that “there’s a deal to be made” in Greenland, amid President-elect Trump’s indication that the US wants control over the world’s largest island.
Greenland is considered crucial for American national security, according to Trump and Vance, due to its natural resources and strategic location. The Danish government, however, has expressed willingness to boost security in Greenland or increase the US military presence there.
Vance argued that Denmark has not done enough to secure the island, while also stating that military force isn’t necessary for control. The Vice President-elect emphasized that Greenlandic people want to be empowered to develop their natural resources.
The competition for Arctic territories is heightened due to climate change, with global superpowers searching for footholds in the region. Trump has argued that securing Greenland is critical as Russia and China also seek influence there.
Danish officials have made it clear that Greenland is not for sale. However, the US and Denmark may discuss boosting security or increasing military presence through existing agreements.
Not all Republicans support military intervention, with Sen. James Lankford stating that the US will not invade another country. The US and Denmark are set to engage in talks on bolstering security in Greenland.
