US Vice President JD Vance has announced that the country will safeguard its artificial intelligence (AI) and chip technologies from theft and misuse, while blocking efforts to “weaponize” these critical technologies.
Vance made the statement at France’s AI Action Summit in Paris, where he emphasized the need for international cooperation to strengthen protections against AI threats. He specifically targeted authoritarian regimes that have stolen and used AI to enhance their military intelligence and surveillance capabilities.
The USVP took aim at cheap, heavily subsidized technologies, suggesting that they pose a threat to national security. Vance also criticized European officials who prioritize regulation over embracing the growth potential of AI.
However, he emphasized that the US is willing to partner with its allies in the AI revolution, urging Europe to adopt a more favorable attitude towards the technology. Vance argued that international regulatory regimes should foster the creation of AI technology rather than strangle it.
The EU has committed to investing 200 billion euros in AI research and development, citing the need to remain competitive in the global AI landscape.
