US Warns of Ebola Risk in Uganda

US health officials have issued a travel alert to Americans visiting Uganda due to an ongoing Ebola outbreak. Despite not advising a complete ban on travel, they urge enhanced precautions such as avoiding people with symptoms and skipping healthcare visits unless medically necessary.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has sent experts to help Ugandan health officials respond to the threat. The WHO has noted that extensive travel of the infected individual has increased the risk of widespread transmission.

US-aided lab testing capabilities in Uganda date back 25 years, but recent developments have complicated efforts to contain the outbreak. CDC personnel have been cleared to work with WHO counterparts on response activities in Uganda and two other countries affected by different outbreaks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) had faced a temporary ban from working with the CDC, but this restriction has been lifted for specific response efforts.
