US Warns Russia of Troop Deployment and Sanctions

US Vice President JD Vance has warned Russia that the United States may deploy troops to Ukraine and impose further sanctions if Vladimir Putin doesn’t negotiate a peace deal in good faith. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Vance said sending US troops was “on the table” as economic punishment for not guaranteeing Kyiv’s independence.

Vance’s comments contrast with recent statements from President Donald Trump, who suggested Ukraine might become part of Russia in the future, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who said non-European troops would police any agreement between Ukraine and Russia. Vance emphasized that NATO remains crucial to US security but also advocated for more burden-sharing among European allies.

The comments come amid concerns about a “dirty deal” being struck with Putin to end the war without Ukrainian involvement. European leaders are scrambling to emphasize the need for Ukraine’s participation in any peace negotiations, with French President Emmanuel Macron calling for stronger Europe-wide defenses and economic growth.
