The United States defeated Canada 4-3 in overtime to win the women’s ice hockey world championship on Sunday. Tessa Janecke scored with 2:54 left in the extra period, securing their 11th title at the worlds.
Taylor Heise set up Janecke for the winning goal, which came after a dramatic sequence of events. With Sarah Fillier in the penalty box, Canadian defenseman Jocelyn Larocque was pressured behind the net and sent a pass that Heise intercepted, leading to Janecke’s shot into the open left side of the net.
The US team, led by captain Hilary Knight, cruised through the tournament, winning all four preliminary games and eliminating Germany and Finland in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Canada, however, remains the defending Olympic champion and leads the world tournament with 13 gold medals.
Knight recorded an assist to increase her record at the worlds to 53, while Jennifer Gardiner scored for Canada alongside Fillier. The US team’s Aerin Frankel was replaced by Gwyneth Philips in the final period after a crash, but ultimately secured the win.
