US Women’s Soccer Team Beats Australia 2-1 at SheBelieves Cup

The United States women’s soccer team secured a 2-1 victory over Australia on Sunday, putting them in position to win the SheBelieves Cup for the sixth straight year. Despite making 11 changes from their previous match against Colombia, the US team quickly responded with goals by Lynn Biyendolo and Michelle Cooper.

Biyendolo opened the scoring just 42 seconds into the game, followed by Cooper’s goal six minutes after entering the match. However, Australia’s Michelle Heyman scored a late goal in the 80th minute to make the final score 2-1.

“It was absolutely surreal,” Cooper said about her first US goal. “I basically stole it from my teammate Ally Sentnor, but she was happy for me.”

The US team is now in a strong position to win the SheBelieves Cup for the eighth time in 10 years. They will face Japan in the final match on Wednesday and currently trail them by one point due to goal difference.

Goalkeeper Teagan Micah made several crucial saves throughout the game, including a key save on Ally Sentnor in the 88th minute.

The US team has been making changes to their lineup ahead of next year’s Women’s World Cup qualification, with new players and coaches being brought in. Cooper praised the opportunity to join the team and build connections with her teammates and staff.

Sisters Alyssa and Gisele Thompson became the fourth pair of sisters to start a match together for the US women’s team, marking an exciting milestone in their careers.
