USA Hockey Wins Gold Medal 92 Years in the Making, Tribute to Johnny Gaudreau

The United States men’s hockey team won its first gold medal at the IIHF World Championship in 92 years, and it was not just a victory for the American players. The team dedicated their achievement to late teammate and forward Johnny Gaudreau.

“We did it for a reason,” goalie Jeremy Swayman said. “We had a purpose.” The team’s success was a testament to Gaudreau’s legacy, who paved the way for future generations of US hockey players. Gaudreau represented the US five times at the World Championship and is the all-time leader in points with 43.

Gaudreau’s passing on August 29, 2024, was still deeply felt by his teammates. “He would be here, obviously,” said defenseman Zach Werenski. “We miss him terribly.” But Gaudreau’s memory inspired the team to achieve greatness. As Werenski noted, “No one deserves this gold medal more than him.”

Gaudreau’s No. 13 jersey was a constant presence throughout the tournament, and it took center stage during the trophy presentation. Players, including Tage Thompson and Brady Skjei, praised Gaudreau for his impact on the game and USA Hockey.

The team’s victory was a fitting tribute to Gaudreau’s spirit and legacy. “I think he’s watching us right now and he’s very proud,” said Skjei. As Werenski stated, “I’m just really happy to get a gold medal for him this year.” The US men’s hockey team’s gold medal win will be remembered as a testament to Gaudreau’s enduring legacy in the sport.
