Smartphone use is common in restrooms, but new research suggests that this habit may be linked to a higher risk of developing hemorrhoids. A recent study found that people who used their phones on the toilet were 46% more likely to have hemorrhoids.
The study controlled for other factors such as age, sex, and body mass index, but the link between phone use and hemorrhoid development remained strong. Long phone sessions in the restroom can lead to prolonged sitting, which increases pressure on sensitive areas and may cause irritation and inflammation.
Hemorrhoids are a common condition that causes discomfort and pain, resulting in around $4 million in outpatient visits annually in the US. The total cost of healthcare expenses due to hemorrhoids is over $800 million per year.
To avoid unnecessary discomfort, consider leaving your phone behind next time you’re at the restroom. Keeping bathroom sessions short may help save you from potential complications.
