The United States Postal Service (USPS) is set to transfer from an independent agency to under the supervision of the Commerce Department. This change comes after years of financial struggles, including a $9.5 billion net loss in 2024. The rise of digital communication has also led to a decline in first-class mail volume.
According to Kenny Nash, USPS Covington Office Supervisor, “We are dedicated to taking care of our customers no matter who controls the postal service.” However, this change may impact rural areas more significantly, as they tend to be more expensive to deliver to. The Trump administration’s efforts to reduce costs could exacerbate these effects.
University of North Georgia political science professor Carl Cavalli notes that the transition will not have an immediate impact on daily operations. He also emphasizes that Congress has the power to review and approve changes to the postal service, which would require a constitutional amendment for significant changes to occur.
Cavalli warns that privatization could lead to a shift in the USPS’s role, making it more focused on package delivery services like FedEx. While the change is expected to be gradual, Americans relying on the USPS may feel the effects most significantly.
