Utah Attorney General Derek Brown has joined 38 other attorneys general in a letter urging the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to increase enforcement on weight loss drugs, specifically addressing concerns over compounding pharmacies selling counterfeit products.
Brown’s office released a statement saying the FDA needs to “ramp up enforcement” against illegal compounders who may be participating in the market. He emphasized that Utah’s physical location makes it vulnerable to a growing drug epidemic, including online sales of fake or tampered-with weight loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy.
The issue is compounded by the ease with which people can buy these products online, often without knowing the supplier. Experts warn that counterfeit pills can contain antifreeze, incorrect amounts of active ingredients, and other hazardous materials.
Brown also highlighted his recent involvement in the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), an organization that brings together all 56 attorneys general from across the US to work on bipartisan issues. By collaborating with fellow attorneys general, Brown aims to tackle critical issues affecting communities nationwide through legal means.
