Utah University has fired head basketball coach Craig Smith, just four games into the team’s regular season. Assistant Josh Eilert will take over as interim coach for the remainder of the season. The Utes are currently 15-12 overall and 7-9 in the Big 12 Conference. With their next game against Arizona scheduled for Wednesday, the move comes after Smith failed to replicate his previous success at Utah State University, where he led the team to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. Athletics Director Mark Harlan stated that a change is needed to get the Utes to their desired level of performance, and will provide support to Eilert, staff, and student-athletes moving forward.
