The University of Texas baseball team’s bid to advance through the NCAA tournament was dealt a significant blow as they fell to second-seeded UTSA, 9-7, in front of a crowd of 7,953 fans. The Longhorns, who were looking for their fourth consecutive regional title, were outmaneuvered by the Roadrunners.
UTSA took an early lead with five runs in the third inning, but the Longhorns responded with four more to retake the lead. However, the Roadrunners mounted a comeback, scoring seven runs in the middle innings to take control of the game.
The turning point came in the sixth inning when UTSA’s Nathan Hodge delivered a two-RBI single, tying the game at 6-6. The Roadrunners took the lead for good on an RBI double from Garrett Gruell and were never trailed again.
UTSA’s Braylon Owens pitched four strong innings, allowing just one run to secure the win. Max Grubbs, who was tagged with the loss, had a tough outing, allowing two runs in 1 1/3 frames of relief.
Despite the loss, the Longhorns will still meet No. 3 seed Kansas State in an elimination game on Sunday at 2 p.m.
