The No. 2 Virginia baseball team dropped its season opener to Michigan 5-4 in 11 innings on Friday afternoon. The loss snapped a 24-game winning streak in February, which dated back to Feb. 27, 2021.
Reliever Ryan Osinski took the loss despite pitching 3.1 scoreless innings. Starter Jay Woolfolk struck out five but allowed two-run ball over 4.2 innings. Chris Arroyo drove in three runs and hit a game-tying, two-run homer in the seventh inning for the Cavaliers.
Michigan’s Matt Spear led the way with a two-run homer in the fifth inning. The Wolverines took an early 2-0 lead but Woolfolk settled down after the first inning. The Cavaliers tied the game at 4-4 on Arroyo’s home run, but Michigan’s Mitch Voit scored the winning run on a three-base Virginia error in the 11th.
Virginia is now 16-6 under coach Brian O’Conner in season openers and has won its last five opening-day games. The Wolverines have taken the all-time series 12-9-1, extending their win streak to three games.
