According to data from 2022, over 14.6 lakh new cancer cases emerged in the country, with breast and cervical cancers being the most common among women. This World Immunization Week (April 24-30), CARE Hospitals is highlighting the importance of vaccines in preventing cervical and liver cancers. The Indian government has already included the HPV vaccine in its Universal Immunization Programme, which protects young girls from cervical cancer.
Dr. Satish Pawar, a surgical oncologist at CARE Hospitals, emphasizes that vaccines can prevent cancer. “The HPV and Hepatitis B vaccines offer us a real chance to reduce cancer cases in the coming years,” he says. Dr. Prabha Agarwal, an obstetrician-gynecologist, also stresses the importance of vaccination, especially for young women up to 26 years old.
The HPV vaccine is most effective when administered between 9 and 14 years, but catch-up vaccinations are recommended for those who haven’t received it yet. This vaccine can prevent over 90% of cervical cancer cases. The Hepatitis B vaccine, typically given at birth, offers lifelong protection from chronic liver infections and reduces the risk of liver cancer significantly.
Vaccinating boys is also essential, as they can act as carriers of HPV and contribute to its spread. By vaccinating both daughters and sons, families can protect their loved ones and strengthen herd immunity.
