Vagus Nerve Stimulation Aids Spinal Cord Injury Recovery

Researchers have discovered that pairing targeted vagus nerve stimulation with physical therapy can help individuals with partial paralysis from spinal cord injuries regain control over everyday tasks. The treatment, already approved by the US FDA for post-stroke motor impairments, shows promise in improving function and mobility in those with incomplete spinal cord injuries. A study led by Michael Kilgard at the University of Texas at Dallas is investigating its potential benefits, including enhanced ability to perform simple actions like dressing and personal grooming.
