Valley PBS Receives $26M Grant from Public Media Bridge Fund

Valley PBS, which serves millions of residents in Central California, has been awarded a stabilization grant by the Public Media Bridge Fund. The grant, worth $26 million, is part of an initial round of awards made to 74 organizations nationwide. The fund was created after Congress rescinded funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which many stations had relied on for decades. Valley PBS joins three other California-based stations in receiving grants, including those in Eureka, Point Reyes Station, and Redding.

The organization faces challenges, having recently undergone leadership changes, staff cuts, and lost its antenna and broadcasting equipment due to a Sierra wildfire. The Public Media Bridge Fund aims to stabilize the infrastructure of financially challenged stations like Valley PBS, which relied heavily on Corporation for Public Broadcasting funding. The grant will help these stations continue vital services such as local news and emergency alerts.

CEO Tim Isgitt stated that the initial round of funding provides “a foothold” for grantees to stabilize their operations and develop new models. He emphasized that this grant is a step forward in building a sustainable future for public media, creating stronger, more engaged communities.
