Valve’s Steam Machine may not live up to its promise, but the company could be on the verge of revolutionizing mobile gaming. If successful, games built for desktop PCs can run on phones, Macs, and other Arm hardware without needing developers to port them.
In an exclusive interview, Valve revealed it’s behind a push to bring Windows games to Arm chips. The tech is already being used on my Samsung Galaxy, allowing me to play Steam games like Hollow Knight: Silksong on Linux-based phones with the Arm processor architecture.
The breakthrough comes thanks to open-source technologies Proton and Fex. Proton enables Windows-to-Linux compatibility on the Steam Deck, while Fex bridges x86 and Arm architectures, making PC games playable on both. This means no more waiting for game developers to port their titles to mobile devices.
