A malicious game on Steam, PirateFi, has been removed from the platform after containing malware. Valve recommends a full PC reset for users who installed the game, but suggests running a full system scan with antivirus software first.
PirateFi was created by an indie developer without a social media presence and had a similar gameplay loop to Rust but with a Sea of Thieves look. Despite being removed from Steam, Valve warned players that the developer’s account uploaded builds containing suspected malware.
Before taking drastic measures like a full PC reset, users are advised to run a full system scan using Microsoft Defender or invest in antivirus software for additional protection. They should also inspect their gaming PCs for “unexpected or newly installed software” as a sign of potential malware infection.
Valve advises caution when downloading new games and encourages users to carefully review game ratings, reviews, and developer information before installation. This can help identify potential risks and avoid malicious apps like PirateFi.
