Private space station developer Vast has announced its first crewed flight to the world’s first private space station is planned for June 2026. The company, which has been working on its ambitious project since 2021, claims that its Haven-1 station will not only be the world’s first private space station but also the first to offer artificial gravity through a spinning module.
Currently in development, Vast’s Haven-1 is expected to be completed by July and will undergo rigorous testing before its maiden crewed flight. The company says it has successfully completed its primary structure qualification proof test with no visual changes observed and a leak rate within specification.
The first crewed flight will see four astronauts spend two weeks on the station, proving its readiness to take on the role of successor to the International Space Station (ISS). This is crucial as Vast’s Haven-2 project relies on NASA selecting its idea to succeed the ISS. If successful, Vast estimates that Haven-2 should be ready for operations in 2028.
Haven-1 will serve as a stepping stone for Vast’s larger vision of creating a space station with nine modules and a robotic arm, aimed at providing enough room for astronauts to conduct experiments in microgravity and in-space manufacturing. The project’s success hinges on NASA’s decision next year, which could pave the way for a new era in private space exploration.
As Vast pushes forward with its ambitious plans, it is clear that the company’s innovative approach to space development will be crucial in shaping the future of humanity’s presence in space.
