Vatican City, March 19, 2025 – Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, denied that he discussed the possibility of Pope Francis’ resignation during his recent visits to the pontiff while hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.
Parolin addressed the pope’s health and ability to lead the Catholic Church, stating that he should follow medical reports. During his last visit on March 9, Parolin found Pope Francis in better condition than initially reported.
Regarding governance, Parolin emphasized that despite limited conversations due to the pope’s health, Francis has made decisions by issuing instructions. The Vatican secretary of state also expressed concern over Europe’s rearmament plan, citing the need for disarmament and the Holy See’s long-standing advocacy for controlled disarmament on an international level.
Parolin reiterated his hope that dialogue in Ukraine can move forward without obstacles. His comments come as Pope Francis has been hospitalized since February 14.
