Tennis legend Venus Williams is making history off the court as well. The seven-time Grand Slam champion confirmed her engagement to Italian actor Andrea Preti during a recent interview at the Mubadala Citi DC Open tournament.
Williams, 45, revealed that her fiancé encouraged her to continue playing tennis despite feeling exhausted and needing quality health insurance. “It’s 9 to 5 except you’re running the whole time,” she joked, highlighting the demanding nature of professional tennis.
The five-time Wimbledon champion has also made headlines for becoming the oldest player to win a tour-level singles match since Martina Navratilova in 2004. Williams will face World No. 24 Magdalena Frech in the Round of 16 on July 24.
In addition to her singles success, Williams is still competing in the doubles draw with partner Hailey Baptiste. They defeated Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue earlier in the tournament, setting up a match against Taylor Townsend and Zhang Shuai on July 23.
