Venus Williams Makes History with Age-Defying Win

Venus Williams, 45, made history by defeating fellow American Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4 in the DC Open, becoming the oldest player to win a singles match on the WTA Tour since Martina Navratilova won in the first round of Wimbledon in 2004.

Williams’ victory marked her second tour win in as many days after she recorded a doubles win alongside Hailey Baptiste. The American tennis star revealed that playing after time off is particularly challenging, but ultimately praised her team for their support and encouragement.

“I’m here with my friends, family, people I love,” Williams said. “This has been just a beautiful night.”

Williams’ impressive display showcased her aggressive serving and returning skills, which helped her overcome a tough test against Stearns. The American tennis legend will face a tougher challenge in the next round against world No. 24 Magdalena FrÄ™ch of Poland.

In addition to her on-court success, Williams also spoke about her recent engagement to Italian actor Andrea Preti, who was in attendance at the match.
