Tennis legend Venus Williams will make her highly anticipated return to the US Open after a two-year absence, receiving a wild-card invitation to compete in singles at Flushing Meadows. The American, who turned 45 on Wednesday, will become the oldest entrant in singles since Renée Richards competed in 1981.
Williams has won seven major singles championships, including at the US Open in 2000 and 2001, as well as 14 titles in women’s doubles with her sister Serena. However, she has been absent from Grand Slam tennis since the 2023 US Open due to injuries.
After a successful return to competitive tennis in July, Williams expressed confidence in her abilities, stating that she “feel[s] amazing” following her recent match. This marks a significant comeback for the legendary player, who last participated in a Grand Slam tournament after being diagnosed with uterine fibroids and undergoing surgery last year.
Williams will face stiff competition from other American players, including Clervie Ngounoue, Julieta Pareja, and Caty McNally, as well as international stars Caroline Garcia and Talia Gibson. The US Open is scheduled to begin on August 24 with singles matches starting on August 19-20 in mixed doubles.
