Veteran Driver Dies in 283mph Crash at Bonneville Salt Flats

Chris Raschke, a veteran driver, died on Sunday after losing control of his vehicle while traveling at an incredible speed of 283 mph during a speed record attempt at the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. He was 60 years old.

The Southern California Timing Association (SCTA), which hosts SpeedWeek at the flats, confirmed Raschke’s death and stated that he had lost control of his land speed vehicle at approximately the 2 1/2 mile mark. Raschke was treated by medical professionals at the scene but unfortunately passed away from his injuries.

The cause of the incident is currently under investigation by the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office. However, officials say it appears to have been an accident. Raschke had set a top speed of 391 mph in the “Speed Demon” streamliner during previous events.

Raschke was a well-known figure in the racing community and held a special place with the American Hot Rod Foundation. The organization released a statement saying he was someone who found a perfect balance between friendly and competitive, and that they send their deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

The Bonneville Salt Flats have been used as a racing ground for decades due to its unique glass-like surface. Although this incident marks the first fatality in several years, there were no other casualties at the scene.
