Veteran Programmer Warns AI Not a Miracle Cure for Corporate Productivity Issues

AI’s supposed ability to boost productivity is being used by companies as a crutch to mask their own lack of ideas, says veteran programmer Dax Raad. He argues that the quality of ideas, not the speed of code production, is what’s holding back software companies.

Raad notes that AI isn’t making workers more efficient; instead, it’s allowing them to churn out tasks with less energy spend, but at the cost of lower-quality work and burnout. In fact, research shows that using AI can intensify employees’ jobs, leading to “workload creep” and fatigue.

The problem is that AI tools are often used to mask poor code quality, rather than solving it. This not only slows down production but also breeds resentment among coworkers. Raad believes that ideas being expensive to implement was a good thing, as it forced engineers to think creatively.

Moreover, relying on AI for too long can stifle creativity and critical thinking. As experts warn, this is another form of cognitive offloading, where crucial brain functions are outsourced to technology.

In the end, Raad concludes that humans must take responsibility for running a tight ship, even if it means working harder. He argues that AI tools are just one tool among many, and their effectiveness depends on how they’re used, not their supposed ability to “supercharge” productivity.
