Victoria’s Secret’s website went dark after a cyberattack, disrupting online sales and sending its share price lower. The company took down its site as a precaution and teams work to restore operations. While physical stores remained open, the attack raised concerns about retailers’ preparedness for digital breaches.
The company did not confirm when the security incident occurred but reported an 8 percent drop in share value since Tuesday. Shoppers saw effects of the outage on social media earlier this week. It’s unclear who perpetrated the attack, but it follows other high-profile cyberbreaches at major retailers, including Marks & Spencer and Harrods.
Cody Barrow, CEO of Eclectic IQ, a cybersecurity services company, warned that retailers’ reliance on third-party systems makes them vulnerable to attacks. “Retailers are not segmenting systems well enough to contain incidents,” he said. The incident highlights the need for better digital security measures in the retail industry.
