The Minnesota Vikings have chosen J.J. McCarthy, their No. 10 pick in the 2024 draft, as their new starting quarterback. McCarthy has recovered from a torn meniscus in his right knee and appears confident in his abilities.
McCarthy spoke to local reporters on Tuesday for the first time since last season, expressing confidence in himself and the team’s faith in him. The Vikings have cleared him for full participation in their offseason program, which began last week. He has regained weight after losing 25-30 pounds during his recovery process.
McCarthy attributes his weight loss to a period of inactivity during his initial recovery stage. Once he started exercising again, swelling set in and required additional surgery. The quarterback expects to maintain his current weight and aims to continually improve himself without comparing to others.
Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell has not named McCarthy the starter yet but plans to eventually name him so as “the outcome we want.” General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah sees it as a competition between McCarthy and himself, emphasizing self-improvement.
