Vikings Shakeup: Carson Wentz Signs as Backup QB

The Minnesota Vikings made significant changes to their quarterback room on Sunday, trading Sam Howell and acquiring Carson Wentz in a trade that reshaped their depth chart.

As part of the deal, the Vikings sent a 2026 fifth-rounder and a 2027 seventh-rounder to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Howell and a 2026 sixth-rounder. The move came just days after the team signed free agent quarterback Brett Rypien was released due to roster cuts.

Wentz, 32, brings experience working with the Vikings’ coaching staff and offense, having played with the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. He has a proven track record as a starting quarterback, having led the Eagles in 2016 and started every game for Indianapolis in 2021.

The signing of Wentz addresses concerns about the team’s depth behind starter J.J. McCarthy. Max Brosmer, a former Gophers quarterback, is expected to make the team after a strong preseason performance.

This deal marks the Vikings’ second veteran pickup in the past week, following their trade with the New York Jets for defensive tackle Harrison Phillips.
