Disco group defends decision to perform during Trump inaugural events. The Village People announced on Facebook that they will be performing at various events surrounding President-elect Donald Trump’s second inauguration, despite some fans’ disapproval.
“We believe music is performed without regard to politics,” the group stated in their announcement. Their iconic anthem “Y.M.C.A.” has been a regular part of Trump’s campaign playlists, and the singer, Victor Willis, initially expressed concerns about its use at rallies due to fan backlash.
However, Willis later changed his mind after realizing that Trump genuinely enjoyed the song. He now considers performing at the inauguration, but would only do so if it was clear that the event was not an endorsement.
The group’s music has become a global anthem, and they believe it can bring people together. Their statement also referenced the 2020 election, in which Vice President-elect Kamala Harris won, and expressed hope that their performance at Trump’s inauguration would help unite the country after a divisive campaign season.
