Villarreal Stun Barcelona to Claim Champions League Spot

Villarreal came from behind to shock Barcelona 3-2 at the Olympic Stadium, handing the LaLiga champions their first league defeat since December. The victory secured a spot in the Champions League next season for Villarreal.

Barcelona took an early lead through Fermin Lopez’s goal before Ayoze Perez equalized in the fourth minute. Lamine Yamal levelled the score with a curling strike, but Santi Comesaña equalised five minutes after the break. Canadian Tajon Buchanan fired the winner from a Gerard Moreno cross in the 80th minute to secure Villarreal’s Champions League spot.

The result also boosted Villarreal’s chances of securing a top-five finish and representation in next season’s Champions League, currently held by Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, and Villarreal. The standings show Barcelona leading with 85 points, four ahead of second-placed Real Madrid.
