Viola Davis Saves the Day in Formulaic Action Thriller G20

Viola Davis shines as the star of Amazon MGM Studios’ latest action-thriller, G20. While the movie itself is predictable and formulaic, with a plot that can be easily guessed within 10 minutes, Davis brings her signature authenticity and ferocity to the role of Danielle, the American president who finds herself in the midst of a terrorist attack at the G20 summit.

G20 follows Danielle as she navigates her duties as president while also dealing with personal struggles as a mother. When a terrorist organization led by Antony Starr’s Rutledge invades the summit, Danielle must use her military training to rescue her family and save the day. The movie features a star-studded cast, including Marsai Martin, Ramón Rodríguez, and Douglas Hodge, but Davis is the only one who truly brings depth to the film.

While the script tries to tackle societal commentary on sexism and racism, these themes are handled in a shallow way. However, Davis’s character remains the emotional core of the movie, and her relationship with her daughter Serena (Marsai Martin) is genuinely heartfelt. The film’s attempts at humor fall flat, but Davis’s performance saves the movie from becoming too forgettable.

With its cheap special effects and cardboard villain, G20 is a product of formulaic streaming movies that prioritize predictability over originality. However, Viola Davis’s commanding presence makes even this phony film worth watching. As much as she may be starring in a shallow action-thriller, Davis still manages to hold our attention and make the movie slightly more bearable.
